In 2012, I read that single-use coffee cups cannot be recycled as they contain plastic, resulting in a crazy amount of them going to landfill each year.
At the time I was running a gift manufacturing business and one day, I guess you could say I had an existential moment, realising we were very much part of the problem, not the solution. I put two and two together, changed our business model and went on to form Ecoffee Cup in 2014.
Over 100 billion single-use cups go to landfill globally each year. Unfortunately, many British tea and coffee drinkers still believe single-use cups are recyclable but very few facilities currently exist to manage the complex task of separating the plastic from paper so the vast majority end up in landfill. We created Ecoffee Cup and set up the #stopthe100billion campaign to raise awareness and help tackle the problem of single-use packaging going to landfill while simultaneously providing a stylish, practical reusable for the coffee-consuming public. Ecoffee Cup is a new generation of reusable cup manufactured using bamboo fibre which can be buried with household organic waste at the end of its lifecycle (the cups will last for years if treated well).
