How mammoths could stop us from going extinct
With COP26 still in full swing, we take a trip to the Siberian tundra where the impacts of the climate crisis are clear. But perhaps too, the solutions. Pleistocene Park is bringing large mammals to turn the tundra into grazing land like it was back in the last Ice Age to stop the permafrost thawing. Now, all we need is a resurrected mammoth.

Remembrance Day
Our vendor Sean McAvoy reflects on his time in the Falklands and how he’s unexpectedly become a diplomat in the middle of UK-Argentinian relations. Plus we look into the reality of veteran homelessness.

Also inside:
- A roundup of news, views and miscellany in The Dispatch, including Paul Chuckle’s 007 plans
- John Bird says government safety nets are in serious need of repair
- How dark money is disrupting climate change campaigns
- Naga Munchetty lets her younger self know that one day she’ll take up golf
- It was Kathryn Hahn all along as she talks about her career post-WandaVision
- And Maricica in Bristol talks about how selling The Big Issue has changed since the pandemic

Plus much more!

The Big Issue

The Big Issue’s own-brand products support the creation of a range of work-based opportunities for disadvantaged people.
The Big Issue has spent over 27 years at the helm of self-help revolution. It all began with the launch of The Big Issue magazine in 1991, which was created to offer homeless and disadvantaged people the opportunity to earn a legitimate income by selling a magazine on the streets. Since then over 200 million copies magazine have been sold by over 100,000 people. Vendors buy the magazine upfront for £1.50 and sell it on to the public for £3.00, and in doing so each runs their own micro-enterprise. In 2005 Big Issue Invest was launched, with the aim of extending The Big Issue’s mission by financing the growth of social enterprises and charities across the UK. To date the organisation has directly invested in over 350 such organisations, and manages or advises on more than £170 million of social funds.
